We need an experienced Applications Developer to join our Information Services team. This is a full-time permanent position based in Wellington Customhouse.

Every plane and ship entering or leaving New Zealand must be reported to Customs. We operate sophisticated systems to process travellers, target social harm, risks and capture essential data for government, all while making it fast and easy for lawful travellers. Our travel systems include SmartGate appliances that use facial biometrics to verify the identity of travellers and associated applications that manage processing of airline and cruise ship passengers, and interactions with our officers.
Our Travel team currently comprises six developers (including this role) and a Test Automation Engineer, who report to the Product Manager Travel. We are an Agile team that works closely with other teams, groups and agencies, and complement the Travel team with contract personnel depending on what projects we have underway.
We ideally need someone…

With at least 3 years' application development experience using Java.
Working knowledge of JavaScript/Typescript and SQL (preferably Postgres).
API development and integration using REST and web services.
Familiar with Gitlab with an emphasis on CI/CD pipelines.

To be successful as an Applications Developer, the appointee requires the following knowledge, experience, skills and personal attributes:

The proven ability to work well in a team in a highly collaborative manner.
The ability to work flexibly, delivering change and support across multiple products and services.
Able to adapt to and learn new technologies and methodologies as required.
Three to five years of relevant experience in developing software.
Good knowledge of relevant software development topics, including development languages, databases, methodologies, DevOps, build pipelines, automation, APIs, cloud concepts, as well as an understanding of other related areas such as UX design, product development, networking, security compliance, capacity management, etc.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Deliver quality outcomes, even when under pressure.

Note: this role involves providing regular on-call support. This will usually be for one week in four (or less often) and we expect that typically there will be no more than one call-out per week of being on-call.

To join Customs in any role, you must be a New Zealand citizen or NZ permanent resident* and be able to obtain and retain Confidential security clearance.
(*) A New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided continuously in New Zealand for the last 5 years and resides in NZ at the time of application;
OR a New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided in New Zealand for the last 5 years and resides in NZ at the time of application, but may have been absent from New Zealand for periods of six or more months within the past five years, preferably in one or more of the following countries: either Australia, Canada, UK or the USA.
