Te Puni Kokiri is the government's principal policy advisor on Maori wellbeing and development. We achieve strategic influence with a focus on providing high quality policy advice and holding other agencies to account for delivering public services to, for and with Maori. This includes our mandate to promote Maori achievement in education, training, health and economic resource development along with performing our monitoring and mentoring roles.
Based in Poneke Wellington, our Policy Puni leads across the public sector to understand and prioritise issues, needs and opportunities impacting on Maori development and wellbeing. The Puni consists of 8 teams focusing on specific Policy areas.
The Housing team focuses on addressing the barriers that make it difficult to develop housing on whenua Maori and on influencing the housing system (from emergency housing to home ownership) to improve outcomes for whanau. We have an exciting 12 month fixed-term opportunity for a kaimahi at Principal level to contribute to and deliver on this important mahi.
Te whai wahitanga | The opportunity Providing a high standard of advice to the Policy Manager, Housing and other key stakeholders within Te Puni Kokiri and across the wider public sector, you will help lead and contribute to shaping and influencing policy. You will:
Provide credible, evidence-based advice anchored in the context of iwi, hapu, whanau and Maori as it applies to Housing and at a Principal level.Take responsibility for leading project and workstreams.Conduct thorough and detailed analysis of complex policy issues to understand their implications and identify potential solutions.Work collaboratively with peers at Te Puni Kokiri and with other government agencies including the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, Kainga Ora and councils in developing and influencing policy.Apply and advise on te ao Maori and Te Tiriti based frameworks as they relate to policy.Provide advice and support to Senior and Executive Leadership teams, Ministers and key stakeholders.Uplift capability within the team through coaching and mentoring kaimahi, and promoting a culture of continuous feedback.The appointment range for this role is between $110,165 and $136,403 per annum and the salary will be determined based on the successful candidate's skills and experience. An experienced policy professional, you will have previous experience in a government policy shop where te ao Maori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi frameworks underpin your mahi. You will be familiar with the current economic environment in Aotearoa and globally and understand the challenges that Maori organisations and businesses face when aiming to reach their full potential. You will have:
Highly competent in prioritising and managing the flow of information, including managing and supporting multiple, complex policy projects at once.Knowledge of the current housing environment in Aotearoa, including the barriers that make it difficult to develop housing on whenua Maori.An understanding of, and ability to prioritise the flow of information and manage complex policy issues.The conceptual and analytical skills to provide solutions to ambiguous or complex problems.Proven ability to lead, manage and support cross-government policy development. Relationship focused, you may have existing relationships with iwi, Councils and/or central government.Highly developed communication skills, including written.
