The Animal Services team at Council administers the legislation and bylaws relating to the control of dogs, stock and other animals.
This is primarily a compliance role but also provides a proactive education service to promote responsible dog ownership.We are looking for an exceptional Animal Services Officer to join the team!
The Animal Services Officer role is a varied one, and you will be responsible for managing complaints that include dog attacks, roaming stock, bees causing nuisance, and even crowing roosters.
Each complaint needs to be investigated to a high legal standard, as from time to time you may be required to give evidence in Court.
You will also be available to assist at community events, talking to members of the public about what we do and how they can better manage their dogs.To be successful in the role, you will need to be able to relate to a broad range of people, some of whom can be confronting and verbally aggressive - so you must be able to confidently manage relationships, conflicts, and disputes, have an affinity with a range of animals, be calm under pressure, and be resolution-focused.A company vehicle and equipment will be provided as your role predominately involves being out in the community.
You will be working from your Council supplied vehicle (of which we have both manual and automatic) as a base, so a full Class 1 driver's licence is required.
You will also need to be computer literate, as much of your time will be spent in the field receiving and completing enquiries electronically.Our primary focus is to enhance the safety of the people of Tauranga while encouraging people to responsibly own and enjoy animals.
While we work to reunite impounded dogs with their owners, some dogs unfortunately are not collected by their owners and are unsuitable to be rehomed, and as such, part of your duties, from time to time, will be to assist a veterinarian to euthanise them.The role is 40 hours per week, working primarily Monday to Friday with flexible hours between 6am - 8pm, with the core hours being between 8am - 5pm.
