About The Role
As an Alcohol and Other Drugs Counsellor at Te Manu Toroa, you will uphold the Tuapapa System of Care by providing whanau- and community-centred care that is holistic, comprehensive, and culturally appropriate.

Te Manu Toroa Trust is seeking an experienced and dedicated Alcohol and Other Drugs Counsellor to join our team. This is a permanent, full-time position within the Mental Health Team. As an Alcohol and Other Drugs Counsellor, you will be responsible for providing comprehensive counselling services to individuals struggling with substance abuse issues. Your main tasks will include:
Conducting initial assessments and evaluations of clients to determine their specific needs and develop personalised treatment plans.
Delivering one-on-one counselling sessions to support clients in overcoming alcohol and other drug dependencies.
Facilitating group therapy sessions to address common challenges and provide a supportive environment for recovery.
Collaborating with other healthcare professionals to ensure integrated care for clients with complex medical and psychological needs.
Providing education and guidance to clients' Whanau on how best to support their loved ones throughout the recovery process.
Maintaining accurate and confidential client records in compliance with legal and ethical standards.
The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication skills, empathy, and a non-judgemental approach towards those seeking help. A relevant qualification in counselling or a related field, along with proven experience working in the field of substance abuse counselling, is essential. To Be Successful, You:
Registered DAPAANZ practitioner with a current practicing certificate
Proven experience in providing counselling and support for individuals with alcohol and other drug dependencies
Strong understanding of the impacts of alcohol and other drug use on individuals, Whanau, and communities
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to build rapport with clients from diverse backgrounds
An empathetic approach with a commitment to upholding professional ethics and boundaries in counselling practice
Ability to develop and deliver effective education and prevention programmes related to alcohol and other drug abuse
Relevant qualification in counselling, psychology, social work or a related field is essential
NZ Resident or right to work in New Zealand
Te Reo Maori, an advantage (Basic to Intermediate)
A Full Clean Driver's Licence
