Based at the Hamilton campus, you will play a pivotal role in supporting teaching and research activities within the School of Engineering. This varied role involves demonstrating best practices in supporting both academics and students, with a strong focus on fostering the next generation of engineers. Your passion for education and skill development will be key to enhancing the knowledge and capabilities of our students.
We are seeking an experienced Electron Microscopy technician to manage our Electron Microscopy and XRD facilities, supporting both internal and external stakeholders. You will deliver high-quality technical support for teaching, research, and commercial activities, ensuring the effective operation and maintenance of laboratory environments. This includes:

Providing training and supervision in research techniques.
Managing laboratory resources.
Maintaining equipment to high operational standards.
Promoting health and safety practices.
Refining standard operating procedures.
Keeping risk registers updated.

The position requires expertise in surface morphology, characterization, and mechanical and chemical analysis, with specialized support across a broad range of Engineering and Science disciplines. Experience in SEM, EDS, EBSD, and XRD is essential; however, candidates with less XRD experience but a willingness to develop their skills will be considered. You will also assist and mentor students and academics with data analysis, as well as produce technical reports for commercial clients. Salary will be based on skills, knowledge, and experience brought to the position.

In addition to your tertiary qualification and/or relevant experience, you will preferably have the following:

Demonstrated experience in the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD), and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) instrumentation.
Proficient in ICT and data handling skills.
High-level knowledge of health and safety requirements.
Extensive experience in laboratory practice, including training and assisting users of analytical and testing instruments in an educational/research environment.
Experience in writing technical reports for external clients.
Full New Zealand driver's licence or equivalent.
First aid certificate.
