Te Whatu Ora – are looking for a Senior Consultant specialising in Intensive Care and / or Anaesthetics to join the team. This is a fixed-term position to cover sabbaticals within the department and is intended to be 12 months in duration. Northland provides public health services across the Northland region, from north of Wellsford to Cape Reinga. Whangarei is the largest hospital in Northland providing secondary care services, supported by three rural hospitals in Kaitaia; Kawakawa, and Dargaville. We are looking for a motivated medical specialist to provide effective and high-quality intensive care medicine and anaesthetic services to the Northland community. The successful candidate will work across the Department of Intensive Care Medicine & Department of Anaesthesia and will participate in teaching and training resident medical staff as well as be actively involved in the consultant on call roster for ICU. The Intensive Care Unit is a modern eight bed department providing care for 525 patient admissions per year; with over 40% mechanically ventilated. We provide an ICU outreach service and hold an accreditation for training by the College of Intensive Care Medicine. Currently we have nine Intensivists contributing to a 1:9 roster and seven registrars providing cover 24/7. Every day, we see a wide range of presentations including paediatrics and major trauma. We provide medical and nursing cover for our busy flight retrieval service in conjunction with St John and Northern Rescue Helicopter limited (NRHL) – overseeing approximately 480 helicopter transfers per year. Northland covers an area of 12,600 square kilometres with a growing population of more than 190,000. It boasts some of the most scenic and exciting coastal areas of New Zealand in a subtropical climate. Whangarei is a 25-minute flight or 2-hour drive from Auckland City. Ideally you will possess FCICM or an equivalent qualification; however, we are open to considering advanced trainees nearing completion of their training. To be eligible for Locum Tenens license registration in NZ, you will need to have completed Specialist training in either the UK (with CCT / CCST), U.S (with American Board Certification), Canada (with FRCPC), South Africa (with FC Anaesthesia) or Australasia.
