About the role | Mo te turanga: We are currently seeking a Medical Laboratory Pre-Analytical Technician or trainee to work in our Specimen Processing Department. The position is full-time (80 hours a fortnight), Monday-Friday with rostered shift times. As an integral member of the Specimen Services team at Awanui Labs, you will: Be required to have a minimum of NCEA Level 3 in Science, Maths and English. Perform pre-analytical checks on all patient samples prior to these samples going through to the Core Laboratory for analysis (i.e. Haematology, Biochemistry, and Microbiology): Ensure all samples have full and accurate identification details that match the requisition form. Ensure the correct samples were received for the tests requested. Ensure the transport conditions were correct (for example: protected from light; transported on ice). Be health & safety focused, and quality-conscious with a high degree of attention to detail for detecting mismatches and errors, yet competent in dealing with high volumes of work in a precise and timely manner. You must be able to follow Standard Operating Procedures. Some duties will require you to stand and walk around for up to 4 hours a day and to handle multiple packages weighing up to 6 kg. Be an effective communicator with team members, be self-motivated, flexible and service-oriented. Be required to learn two laboratory computer systems, including having accurate and fast keyboard skills. Registration with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand (MSCNZ) and an annual practicing certificate as a medical laboratory pre-analytical technician is desirable but not essential. Please note: If you are not already registered with the MSCNZ, we will support you working towards becoming a Qualified Pre-Analytical Technician in the position of Specimen Services Trainee. NB: There are three different pathways to choose from to achieve registration with the MSC: Be a graduate with a human biology based degree. NB: Only the Medical Sciences Council can determine the validity for all non-NZ degrees. Sit the Medical Laboratory Pre-Analytical Technician examination as set by the New Zealand Institute of Medical Laboratory (NZIMLS). Registrations close 20th May each year, and the examination is held on the first Saturday in October. Enrol in the ARA Diploma in Applied Science (Pre-Analytical) Level 5 qualification – an 18 months part-time course so you can work and learn. This has no formal examinations. Learning is assessed through assignments, quizzes, and forum posts. This ARA Diploma is free to staff who agree to be bonded for 12 months following graduation. Alternatively, the bond of $1400 can be deducted as $37 on a fortnightly basis.
