About the role:
Are you a Senior Ophthalmology Registrar or Fellow looking for a great balance of interesting work and excellent lifestyle? Then look no further than Hawke's Bay, New Zealand, a place where we value He kauanuanu – Respect; Akina – Improvement; Raranga te tira – Teamwork and Tauwhiro – Care.

This is an exciting opportunity to apply for the position of Senior Ophthalmology Registrar or Fellow for next year commencing in February and/or August 2025. The Ophthalmology Department offers supportive working conditions and is committed to excellent teaching.

The clinical training involves fellows working in rotation through different subspecialties in the outpatient department. They will also be encouraged to evaluate patients' problems in detail, using logical and clinical data to arrive at an accurate diagnosis. Candidates will be trained in the diagnosis and management of common diseases of the eye in the areas of clinical evaluation, use of various investigative procedures, medical treatment, surgical intervention, and research.

About us:
Hawke's Bay Hospital is a 364 bed hospital providing acute and elective care for the Hawke's Bay region. We have most major medical and surgical subspecialties on site (except cardiothoracic and neurosurgery), as well as paediatrics and O&G. We are well supported by a strong regional ICU team. We have strengthening Primary and Community health services and an increasingly integrated approach to health and health care.

About our team:
Working within a team of 5 Registrars, you will have the full support of 3 Specialist Consultants and work closely with 1 House Officer. While enjoying a wide variety of inpatient cases, you will also be expected to attend Outpatients and work in the Surgical Ward, Operating Theatre, Acute Admissions Unit, and the Emergency Department. There may also be some need to attend outpatient clinics in peripheral units within Hawke's Bay.

The comprehensive fellowship programme comprises technical instruction in modern methods of eye care, extensive work experience, and complete patient care. It prepares candidates for a professional career in comprehensive ophthalmology with the ability to manage an eye care clinic independently. In addition to building on and utilising comprehensive ophthalmology skills, the successful applicant will have exposure to the full range of medical ophthalmology and will be responsible for managing acute ophthalmology clinics. Training will also encompass various ophthalmic laser procedures.

In addition to supervised cataract theatre, there will be opportunities for the successful applicant to maintain existing phaco skills and participate in complex and high-volume cataract surgeries. There will be opportunities to learn extracapsular and small incision cataract surgeries also. The successful applicant will supervise and provide support to junior medical staff to ensure a high standard of clinical practice in the department. An active contribution to regular teaching and tutorials is expected.
