Te ahua o te turunga | The nature of the position The position of Kaitohutohu Matua Maori - Senior Maori Advisor has been created to support the presence of Te Ao Maori and Tikanga in the core functions of LGNZ. The position reports to the Aporei Maori and works closely with all LGNZ kaimahi and LGNZs national committee of Maori elected members, Te Maruata. Hutia Te Rito (LGNZs Maori strategy) has been developed in 2024 to provide the foundations for LGNZs aspirations to build capability for LGNZs kaimahi and members. This includes Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Iwi relationships, Te Reo Maori and Tikanga. The Kaitohutohu Matua Maori is a critical role to support the implementation of Hutia Te Rito, particularly regarding Tikanga and Iwi engagement across the kaimahi and mahi at LGNZ. The role supports the building and maintenance of Iwi partnerships, critical to LGNZs mahi, including (but not limited to) SuperLocal Conference, member events, marketing and communications, policy and advocacy and Te Maruata work programmes. The role will also play an important role in the Tikanga and Te Reo Maori approach for LGNZ. This is a 0.5 FTE, permanent role. Ideally based in Wellington, however we are open to talking to applicants from across the motu. Nga tino pukenga me wheako | Essential knowledge, skills and experiences Demonstratable skills, knowledge, and experience required for application include: Understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, its articles and principles: partnership, participation and active protection. Proficiency in Te Reo Maori me ona Tikanga with a passion for inspiring others to embrace Te Ao Maori and Matauranga Maori. Experience with writing and delivering programmes which include Te Reo Maori, Te Ao Maori perspectives, Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Experience working in a Kaupapa Maori environment, e.g. with Mana Whenua, Iwi, or a Maori organisation. Expert communication and strong interpersonal skills. Demonstrated experience building relationships and managing stakeholders through trust, advocacy, and mana enhancing ways. A strong understanding of how councils and local government operate, and an understanding and appreciation of local government's role in the community would be beneficial to an application. As would political astuteness in navigating the complexities of Te Ao Maori and both central and local government.
