Reporting directly to the General Counsel you will be joining a hard-working and supportive legal team based in the heart of Queenstown. This role offers the opportunity to make a real impact while delivering high-quality legal services that support the Council's work.
What you'll be doing / He aha te mahi
You will be responsible for providing timely, high-quality and fit for purpose legal services to the organisation with a focus on the following subject matter areas: commercial contracting & procurement, infrastructure projects, property, local government and public law, resource management, LGOIMA and privacy compliance, building defect/"leaky building" litigation, construction and consultancy contracts, and civil disputes and litigation.
The role will involve:
Assisting with the provision of strategic advice to the organisation to facilitate robust decision making.
Building strong relationships with internal clients, external legal providers, and stakeholders, ensuring excellent customer service and Council representation.
Mentoring and coaching junior legal team members.
Ensuring compliance with all statutory, regulatory, and council policy requirements.
Maintaining legal expertise and ensuring CPD requirements are met.
What you'll bring to the role / Ko wai to Pukeka
You will have 5+ years PQE in local government, public, commercial, litigation, or resource management law. A motivated, innovative, and solutions-focused individual you will possess strong analytical, risk management, and communication skills. Your professional demeanor and eagerness to learn will make you a valuable addition to our team.
To best succeed in this role, you'll have:
Tertiary bachelor qualification in law and hold a current New Zealand practising certificate.
A demonstrated ability to take on responsibility and use initiative to prioritise and work effectively under pressure and to tight deadlines.
