At Stats NZ/Tatauranga Aotearoa, our vision is to unleash the power of data to change lives. Statistical Infrastructure (SI) is leading the implementation and use of the new Enterprise Processing and Integrated Capabilities (EPIC) to enable and empower Stats NZ business units to unleash the power of their data. SI has a team currently working on a variety of projects spearheading implementation of these new capabilities. We provide leadership and support to optimise the use of key organisational capabilities to enable our business units to reliably deliver to customers.
Scope of your new role
As our Statistical Infrastructure Technical Lead, you will encounter daily problem solving and turn challenges into opportunities. You ll enjoy organisation and attention to detail, working to a high level of performance, often with competing priorities, contributing to the success of the Statistical Infrastructure work program. You ll apply conceptual and creative thinking to push the boundaries and explore new ideas, while ensuring quality, best practice and continuous improvement remains at the forefront of what SI does. Taking a customer centric approach with an ability to build strong relationships allows you to optimise the quality of our service to our customers.
You will be accountable for working closely with a multi-disciplinary team consisting of Design Analysts, from Statistical Infrastructure, Statistical Methods and Census, together with architects from Digital Business Solutions and Enterprise Architecture, to lead the design and development of the 2023 Census Processing and Evaluations System.
This role requires a comprehensive understanding of our Enterprise Processing and Integrated Capabilities (EPIC). It involves workflow architectural design and build at the enterprise and project level. A gap analysis will be made with the existing 2018 Census processing system to identify where our existing EPIC capabilities need extending to enable successful delivery of the 2023 Census.
A crucial part of the role will be leading the implementation of a Statistical Software Development Lifecycle (SSDLC) to the workflows and statistical transformations used to process the 2023 Census. You ll lead Design Analysts engaged in end user computing, promoting their technical development and expertise and provide coaching and mentoring. Experience in Gitlab is a key prerequisite for the role.
You ll get to collaborate and work closely with test consultants setting up a new enterprise automated testing environment for Statistical Infrastructure. And you ll assist the implementation of automated testing best practice using a Behaviour Driven Development (BDD) test framework.

Experience in designing and building statistical workflows and transformations to enable statistical production
Experience delivering practical and effective statistical data solutions in tight time frames
Ability to resolve conceptually and technically challenging problems
Big picture thinking with a future enterprise focus
Enjoy training and mentoring design analysts in developing new solutions using the Statistical Software Development Life Cycle (SSDLC)
Ability to engage knowledgeably with Digital Business Solutions (IT), Solution design consultants, Architects and other technical staff
Confidence communicating technical information effectively with a wide range of people
A customer centric approach and ability to build strong relationships.
