Rural Hospital Medicine SMO position at Dunstan Hospital Six month fixed term commencing 27 January 2025
Dunstan Hospital is a 24 bed rural hospital located in Clyde, Central Otago, run by Central Otago Health Services Limited.
This position will be 0.5FTE – 0.9FTE, with FTE to be confirmed one month prior to commencement.
The position ideally suits someone finishing vocational training in Rural Hospital Medicine; however, those with existing vocational registration are also invited to apply.
Opportunity exists to complete a 'fellowship' in Rural Hospital Medicine, endorsed by the division of Rural Hospital Medicine NZ. Non-clinical time will be provided to appropriate applicants to develop areas of special interest such as minor procedures or simulation training.
You will join a well-established senior clinical team striving for excellence in rural medicine, emphasizing collegiality and adaptability. The stable senior medical staff will support the transition to independent practice for candidates looking to complete RHM fellowship. We are well supported by specialist services in the Southern DHB and work closely with local GPs to care for a community of over 30,000 people. Our hospital services a large area including Roxburgh, Alexandra, Cromwell, and Wanaka.
Clinical services at Dunstan Hospital include: Acute 24-hour inpatient care, rehabilitation and palliative care, and a 3-bed high dependency unit. We provide primary after-hours care from 6pm, with on-site radiology (including CT) and lab (including blood bank) on call overnight. Additionally, we offer outpatient services (including chemotherapy, endoscopy, and day surgery with Mobile Surgical Services) and community services.
As a team, we take responsibility for the assessment and management of acute patients as well as those requiring rehabilitation or palliative care. All seniors are trained in point of care ultrasound. We have a strong teaching focus, with several seniors holding appointments with the University of Otago through the Rural Postgraduate Programme or the Rural Health Academic Centre in Ashburton. We host RHM trainee registrars, house officers on community runs, and undergraduate 5th & 6th year medical students, nursing students, and allied health students.
