Rural Hospital Medicine SMO position at Dunstan Hospital Six month fixed term commencing 27 January 2025
Dunstan Hospital is a 24 bed rural hospital located in Clyde, Central Otago, which is run by Central Otago Health Services Limited.
This position will be 0.5FTE – 0.9FTE. FTE to be confirmed one month prior to commencement. The position would ideally suit someone finishing vocational training in Rural Hospital Medicine, however those with existing vocational registration are also invited to apply.
Opportunity exists to complete a 'fellowship' in Rural Hospital Medicine, endorsed by the division of Rural Hospital Medicine NZ. Non-clinical time will be provided to appropriate applicants allowing them to develop areas of special interest such as minor procedures or simulation training.
You will join a well-established senior clinical team striving for excellence in rural medicine with an emphasis on collegiality and adaptability. The stable senior medical staff will support transition to independent practice for a candidate looking to complete RHM fellowship with us. We are well supported by specialist services in the Southern DHB and work closely with local GPs to care for a community of over 30,000 people.
Clinical services at Dunstan Hospital include: Acute 24-hour inpatient care, rehabilitation and palliative care, and a 3-bed high dependency unit. We provide primary afterhours care from 6pm, and have on-site radiology (including CT) and lab (including blood bank) who are on call overnight. Additionally, we offer outpatient services (including chemotherapy, endoscopy, and day surgery with Mobile Surgical Services) and community services.
As a team, we take responsibility for the assessment and management of acute patients as well as those requiring rehabilitation or palliative care. All seniors are trained in point of care ultrasound. We have a strong teaching focus, with several seniors holding appointments with the University of Otago through the Rural Postgraduate Programme or the Rural Health Academic Centre in Ashburton. We host RHM trainee registrars, house officers on community runs, and undergraduate medical, nursing, and allied health students.
