Details of the offer

Our Regional Parks are much loved and treasured by the people of Auckland and visitors alike, receiving up to 6 million visits a year. They represent the iconic landscapes of the Auckland region and are home to many rare and threatened ecosystems and native species. For many of us, they are places that inspire and define us; places where we seek tranquillity and respite in nature, or more active recreation in the bush or on the beach.
We are on the hunt for an Education Officer to join our Western Sector Parks Team on a fixed term basis!
The Western Regional Parks team are looking for a full-time Education Officer to join our crew on a fixed term basis until mid-March 2025. The role is focused on vehicle use on the beach and dune area of Muriwai. You will be responsible for enabling safe and enjoyable visitor experiences and making vehicle users aware of the damage recreational vehicles can cause to the whenua, native flora and fauna when used in areas and ways not permitted.
With a focus on educational outcomes, you will support the park ranger operations team to look after these highly valued landscapes. You will be able to effectively communicate with diverse ethnicities, ages and world views in a way that achieves behaviour change that benefits the whenua, flora, fauna, broader visitor experience and safe use of the area for all.
You will be confident to work alone, assess situations for potential risk prior to engaging and gather detailed information for reports and associated follow up work.
We are looking for a motivated, people-oriented person to join the Western Sector Regional Parks team. You will need to be physically fit and have proven communication and conflict resolution skills.
You will be a team player with a "can-do attitude" and a high degree of self-awareness.
Experience in a compliance or educative role and a passion for working with people to get better environmental outcomes is highly desirable. Appropriate licenses to support public safety and environmental protection are advantageous as are skill sets associated with driving road and all-terrain vehicles in a beach environment.
While focusing on our customers, community and stakeholders, this role offers great job variety in a stunning and unique work environment.
You will work alongside and be supported by a dedicated team that celebrates strengths, supports personal learning & development, and encourages passion. You will have the opportunity to make a difference in protecting these regional taonga for future generations and contribute to the ongoing development of these spaces to meet the recreational, conservational and intrinsic values for the people of Tamaki Makaurau.
Although based at Muriwai, you may be required to work throughout the Western Sector parks network from time to time. The position is for a three month fixed term period.
If this opportunity sounds like you, please apply online with a cover letter and CV today.
This role is deemed safety sensitive and, in line with Auckland Council policy, you will be required to complete pre-employment drug & alcohol testing. Auckland Council is committed to the protection and wellbeing of children.
This role is classified as a Children's Worker role under the Vulnerable Children Act 2014. As such applicants will be required to undergo police vetting prior to commencing employment. Appointment will be subject to a satisfactory police check.
Auckland Council is an equal opportunity employer (EOE) and we are committed to providing a working environment that embraces and values diversity and inclusion.
