Programme Officer - South Dunedin Future (9-months, fixed-term, parental leave cover)
An exciting opportunity is available to bring together your passion for the environment, your energy for working with communities, and your problem-solving skills to help address one of the biggest challenges facing Dunedin City - adapting to the impacts of climate change.
We're looking for a Programme Officer to join our team for a 9-month period as parental leave cover to help deliver the awesome programme of work in South Dunedin.
South Dunedin Future is a joint initiative of the Dunedin City Council and Otago Regional Council, which is seeking to develop a climate change adaptation plan for South Dunedin. Climate change adaptation is a new and emerging area of work - there's no blueprint for what we're trying to do. Therefore, we're looking for agility, creativity and social savviness to help us land an approach for South D that supports increased resilience to climate impacts, promotes community wellbeing, and enables sustainable urban regeneration.
Reporting to the Programme Manager, you will be part of a small team responsible for delivering a diverse range of work in the policy, project management, and community engagement space. Climate change is a cross-cutting issue that will have wide-ranging impacts on Councils and the communities we serve. In the Programme Officer role, you will have an opportunity to work, lead and add value across the full breadth of the SDF programme.
With your strong analytical and organisational skills, cultural capability, and interpersonal savvy, you'll be working with scientists investigating natural hazards, planners and engineers looking at potential technical solutions, and mana whenua and community representatives to ensure we deliver what matters most to those affected. Most of all, you'll be helping the team coordinate all this and pull it together into a coherent and manageable programme of work.
You don't have to be an expert in all (or even any) of these things, but ideally you will be able to demonstrate some of the following:
Knowledge of climate change adaptation issues
Policy experience
Project coordination or management experience
Community engagement knowledge or experience
Experience working with mana whenua, Pasifika, and diverse community groups
An interest in supporting community wellbeing
Just as important will be having a curiosity about complex issues. You will need to be comfortable working with uncertainty and be able to collaborate with a wide range of partners and stakeholders to solve problems.
Climate change adaptation is a complicated area, and we're learning as we go. The Programme Officer role should provide lots of opportunities for professional development. Supported by the wider team, you'll be able to play to your strengths, be challenged with stretch opportunities, and encouraged to build new skills.
There will be loads of opportunities for growth and development - we don't expect to hire a superhero, but we do hope to help grow one.
