We are seeking a consultants in emergency medicine for permanent and fixed term contracts in a vibrant, multicultural city that is home to outstanding primary, secondary, and tertiary schools, excellent restaurants and shops, and ample local opportunities for outdoor activities including mountain biking, tramping, fishing, hunting, and camping. 

You will be joining a strong team of Emergency Physicians from New Zealand, United Kingdom, Ireland, USA, Canada, and South Africa, as well as 3 clinical nurse specialists and 3 nurse practitioners responsible for supervising 24 resident medical officers (a mix of registrars and senior house officers) as well as 6th year medical students from the University of Otago.

The emergency department is accredited for Tier 2 (24 months) training by the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine, and has a highly successful teaching program for the Part I ACEM examination. 

The ED sees approximately 48,000 adult and paediatric presentations per annum, with an admission rate of around 30%. An Australasian Level 4 ED and regional trauma centre, it sees a higher than average trauma workload due to agricultural injuries from the many farms in the area as well as road accidents from the several state highways transecting the region. There is a 24/7 tauma team and acute services on-site with the exception of neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery, and plastic surgery.


Key Role Responsibilities and Duties On average you will work 80 hours per fortnight, or four 10 hour shifts per week, with a 1 in 4 weekend commitmentOvernight call occurs (on average) once a week and is taken from home.You will deliver clinical care to patients requiring emergency care in the emergency department You will see and advise promptly on patients referred for a specialist opinion; provide and/or supervise clinical care including the assessment, investigation, treatment and appropriate referral of patients who present to the ED Service.You will participate positively in team development and change managementYou will provides clinical supervision and teaching for House Officers and Registrars and provide education for Medical Officers, resident medical officers, and other staff as appropriate, both formally and informally.
Role Requirements

To be successful in your application to this excellent opportunity as the Consultant Emergency Physician, we are looking to identify the following on your profile and past history:
Medical Degree and FACEM or equivalent specialist qualification in Emergency MedicineA broad generalist experience in emergency medicine with procedural competency ATLS Eligibility for Medical Council of New Zealand registration under the vocational pathway in Emergency MedicineDemonstrated understanding of departmental / service development and the provision of strong clinical governance.
