Te Whatu Ora, Health New Zealand, leads the day-to-day running of our health system across New Zealand, with functions delivered at local, district, regional and national levels. The Team
The Emergency Department, Waipapa, is one of the busiest in Australasia and sees approximately 135,000 patients per annum, of which 25% are admitted. The department has accreditation for advanced training in Emergency Medicine for 2 years by the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine, and is renowned as a finishing school for Advanced Trainees, Fellows and new Consultants.
There is a menu of subspecialty fellow positions available including: Hyperbaric and Dive Medicine, Ultrasound, Medical Education and Simulation, Administration and Health Pathway development, Research, Toxicology, Health Informatics, Geriatrics in ED and Palliative Care.
We are the only ED in New Zealand to offer such an extensive range of supported fellowships.
Christchurch is a thriving city with a regional population of 520,000. Post-earthquakes (13 years ago) it has undergone a rebuild with excellent new developments and entertainment centres. At the centre of the South Island, it is considered an outdoor adventure capital, with easy access to mountains, beaches, etc. across the whole of the beautiful South Island. Lifestyle here is one of the main attractions.
The Role
We are seeking an Emergency Medicine Doctor for a 2 year Fixed Term Fellowship position, based at Christchurch Hospital to start July 2025 or earlier if available.
Responsibilities include:
Dedicated flexibly rostered non-clinical Fellowship time each week. There will be opportunities for study, clinical experience, audit and guideline development.
Time working on the ED floor of our busy emergency department. This work will include running the floor at times with consultant back up.
An especially designed part 3 teaching programme to help get to grips with becoming a SMO.
Dedicated non-clinical time to contribute to the broader non-clinical aspects of the department.
Employment on the ASMS MECA with full access to CME entitlements to fund post-graduate study and conferences.
A dedicated ED SMO Fellowship Coordinator to administer the Fellowships, along with a specific relationship with a supervisor in your specialty area.
Work 2 shifts per 7 weeks in our smaller, rural ED in Ashburton.
An attractive roster with no nights.
To be eligible for this position, you will be an advanced trainee nearing completion of Fellow of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine training (Post Written exam for part 2s), or in your first year post fellowship or hold an equivalent specialist qualification to be eligible for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand. We will also accept applications from emergency doctors from outside of Australasia up to 5 years post specialist qualification.
