Fixed-term position (August 2024 – June 2025)Wildlife Management International Limited (WMIL, is an ecological consultancy which carries out a range of research and conservation management projects in Aotearoa New Zealand and globally.
WMIL has a primary focus on protecting, managing, and monitoring natural ecosystems.
A key focus of our work is invasive species eradication, control, biosecurity and auditing, bird research and monitoring, and other ecological surveys.Clients include central and regional government, crown research institutes, non-government organisations, community-led conservation groups, and private sector businesses.
Many projects involve working closely with local organisations and communities in a partnership approach, which WMIL sees as critical to achieving long-term conservation gains.
WMIL is a Toitu carbonzero certified organisation with a commitment to managing and offsetting its emissions.
WMIL has a strong ornithological background, with our team being some of the country's leading bird researchers.
Ensuring that this is more than just a job, we have a real passion for nature, its conservation and research.The OpportunityWMIL is seeking a passionate ecologist to join our motivated team for ten months (19 August 2024 to 20 June 2025).
The position is based in Blenheim, Marlborough, but will involve multiple overnight field trips to work on a range of our challenging and rewarding projects throughout Aotearoa.
The work focuses on seabird and terrestrial bird research, braided river ecological monitoring, ecological management action, and predator control.This is an excellent opportunity for an ecologist wanting to join an experienced and specialised ecological consultancy.This is a fixed-term full-time position for 10 months, from 19 August 2024 until 20 June 2025 (with possibility of becoming permanent).For a full job description and associated information please email: Toni Bell, Wildlife Management International Limited, ****** closing time and date for applications is midnight Friday, 19 July 2024.Person SpecificationMain duties and responsibilities:Seabird, shorebird, and terrestrial bird research.Predator control for a range of species on a range of projects.Wildlife monitoring and management.Data collection and entry according to project protocols.Data analysis and reporting.Engagement with community groups with their projects.Advocacy for a range of projects.We expect you to carry out your job responsibilities in a safe and environmentally aware manner.
Our aim is to ensure all resources are utilised effectively and efficiently.The successful applicant will require the following skills and attributes:NZ National Banding Scheme Licence, preferably a minimum of Level 2 Banding qualifications in seabirds, terrestrial birds and/or waders.Experience in avian monitoring, (a focus on seabirds is of benefit).Experience in predator control.Experience in planning and managing ecological projects including delegation of tasks and team members and working to strict budgets.Experience in community-led (or community-based) projects.Work Safety skills, such as First Aid training and any other knowledge that will prove beneficial in ensuring a safe work environment.A current and full New Zealand driver's license.Ability and willingness to undertake long periods of time in the field, often in remote areas.Ability to live and work in a group when in remote areas (including sharing cleaning and cooking duties).Physically fit and capable of undertaking strenuous field work and skilled in field craft, including navigation (use of GPS and compass).Organisational skills and the flexibility to jump from priority to priority and juggle a variety of functions and projects efficiently, and in a focused and professional manner.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, to mix positively with other staff, internal and external stakeholders, and the public, and to make a good impression when representing WMIL.High interest and commitment to nature conservation and a belief and understanding of community-driven conservation.Excellent observational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to collate data of a high standard in the field.Computer skills for efficient data entry, analysis, and reporting (including the use of GIS software).Ability to produce concise, high quality, written work, and reports to managed timescales.A New Zealand citizen or hold current New Zealand work visa.Additional skills and attributes of benefitA degree in biological science or environmental subject.Boat handling and use experience or qualifications.Hand-held radio experience or qualifications.Chainsaw and/or brush-cutter experience or qualifications.Formal rodent and or pest control qualifications (i.e.
LANTRA Rodent Control, New Zealand Certificate in Pest Operations, etc.
