Job Description: We are seeking an experienced and visionary Chief Production Winemaker to lead our winemaking and cellar teams and have overall ownership of the winery. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in winemaking (particularly Marlborough's signature variety, Sauvignon Blanc), winery management and operations, strong leadership skills, and a passion for producing high-quality wines. As the Chief Production Winemaker, you will oversee all aspects of on-site wine production, ensuring that our wines meet the highest standards of quality and consistency for our winemaking clients. Key Responsibilities: Leadership and Management: Lead and manage the winemaking team (winemakers/cellar/laboratory), providing direction, support, and mentorship. Foster a collaborative and innovative work environment. Production Planning: Develop and implement production plans, schedules, and budgets. Ensure efficient use of resources and adherence to timelines. Quality Control: Oversee all stages of the winemaking process including fermentation, blending, preparation for bottling, and bulk export container loading to internal quality standards (BRC AA+). Conduct regular tastings and sensory evaluations to ensure quality and consistency. Process Optimization: Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement best practices to enhance efficiency and product quality. Stay updated on industry trends and advancements in winemaking techniques. Compliance and Safety: Ensure all production activities comply with local and international regulations. Maintain a safe and clean working environment, adhering to health and safety standards. Inventory Management: Manage inventory levels of raw materials, additives, and finished products. Coordinate with suppliers to ensure timely delivery of quality materials. Record Keeping: Maintain detailed records of production activities, including batch records, lab results, and quality control data. Prepare reports for senior management and regulatory bodies. Collaboration: Work closely with the Quality, Vineyard, and Administration teams to ensure optimal production outcomes. Collaborate with client marketing and sales teams to align production with market demand and promotional activities. Innovation: Lead research and development initiatives to explore new winemaking techniques and product innovations. Client Liaison: Engage with clients and stakeholders to understand their needs and aspirations. Provide expert advice, develop appropriate specifications, and ensure they are met. Qualifications, Experience, and On-the-Job Requirements: Bachelor's degree in Oenology or a related field. Minimum of 10 years of experience in winemaking, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role leading a large-scale winery through vintage. Minimum of five vintages making harvest decisions with ideally a comprehensive knowledge of Marlborough sub-region flavor profiles. Strong understanding of winemaking processes, techniques, and industry standards. Experience in client management. Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills with a passion for seeing your team succeed and grow. Ability to work independently and as the leader of a large, diverse team. An understanding and willingness to work within a strong BRC (AA+) culture. Proficiency in the use of the Vintrace (or similar) winery software system. Detail-oriented with strong organizational and problem-solving skills. Passion for wine and a commitment to quality.
