The Role

The main focus of the position is drive the academic aims of the Maori Strategic Framework within the academic structures and processes of the University, and to ensure that the University is meeting its Treaty obligations. This will involve building partnerships, advocacy and leadership within University leaders, decision-making bodies, academic committees, divisions and departments to enable them to achieve their MSF goals that pertain to teaching, learning and research.
The appointee will be expected to be an active researcher and teacher who develops extensive networks across a range of senior academic roles within the University, both Maori and non Maori. He/she will be the key link between the Office of Maori Development and the Academic Divisions. They will play a senior role as a member of key academic committees, including Ngai Tahu Research Consultation Committee, Te Poutama Maori, Staffing Advisor Committee, and the Boards of Graduate and Undergraduate Studies.
The successful candidate will work closely with the Associate Deans Maori to strengthen their relationship with their Divisions, with OMD and with Maori ki Otakou.
He/she will also be expected to work to ensure that the University’s applications for research grants are fully compliant with their Treaty requirements and intent.
An important aspect of the role will be to provide coordination of advice and guidance on Maori tikanga for senior academics engaging with mana whenua and tangata whenua for research initiatives, student participation and support.
The recruitment scope will allow consideration for an additional 0.5 FTE appointment for the appointee to work as an academic in their field of expertise. This would be conditional on the support of the PVC from the relevant Division. The level of academic appointment would be determined by the normal University processes.
Your Skills and Experience
The successful candidate will be a senior academic engaged in ongoing active research, preferably in an area of importance to Maori life, culture, and society in contemporary Aotearoa New Zealand.
Along with their research expertise, the appointee will have highly developed written and oral skills in Te Reo, underpinned by an innate knowledge of Tikanga Maori. A comprehensive understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its place in tertiary education in Aotearoa New Zealand is also essential.
The appointee will be expected to contribute to the ongoing efforts of the Office of Maori Development to embed the goals of the Maori Strategic Framework, especially within the University’s senior academic management networks. He/she will also be required to act in an advisory role to support the Director of the Office of Maori Development with strategy and planning.
