Associate Dean M ori M ori Development OFFICE of M ORI DEVELOPMENT Our Department The Office of M ori Development is responsible for the strategic approach to M ori advancement across the University of Otago Over the past few years the Office has overseen a period of progressive development of the Universitys engagement with iwi and M ori entities With the implementation of the second iteration of the M ori Strategic Framework MSF in 2017 there are now greater opportunities and increased expectations for our institution to support development aspirations The Universitys M ori enrolment currently stands at 2 097 2018 and looks set to grow significantly over the next twenty years The changing demographics and the deepening commitment of the University to implementing its Treaty obligations has increased the expectations on the Office of M ori Development to guide the University to a new level of engagement by focusing on the following Deepening the Universitys commitment to achieving equitable M ori participation and success rates in tertiary education Championing an environment in which scholarship and partnership will flourish to advance M ori development aspirations Setting and pursuing ambitious goals around embedding m tauranga M ori within the Universitys core functions The Office is currently seeking to appoint a Senior Academic on a parttime basis to support the delivery of these goals The Role The main focus of the position is drive the academic aims of the M ori Strategic Framework within the academic structures and processes of the University and to ensure that the University is meeting its Treaty obligations This will involve building partnerships advocacy and leadership within University leaders decisionmaking bodies academic committees divisions and departments to enable them to achieve their MSF goals that pertain to teaching learning and research The appointee will be expected to be an active researcher and teacher who develops extensive networks across a range of senior academic roles within the University both M ori and non M ori He she will be the key link between the Office of M ori Development and the Academic Divisions They will play a senior role as a member of key academic committees including Ng i Tahu Research Consultation Committee Te Poutama M ori Staffing Advisor Committee and the Boards of Graduate and Undergraduate Studies The successful candidate will work closely with the Associate Deans M ori to strengthen their relationship with their Divisions with OMD and with M ori ki t kou He she will also be expected to work to ensure that the Universitys applications for research grants are fully compliant with their Treaty requirements and intent An important aspect of the role will be to provide coordination of advice and guidance on M ori tikanga for senior academics engaging with mana whenua and tangata whenua for research initiatives student participation and support The recruitment scope will allow consideration for an additional 0 5 FTE appointment for the appointee to work as an academic in their field of expertise This would be conditional on the support of the PVC from the relevant Division The level of academic appointment would be determined by the normal University processes Your Skills and Experience The successful candidate will be a senior academic engaged in ongoing active research preferably in an area of importance to M ori life culture and society in contemporary Aotearoa New Zealand Along with their research expertise the appointee will have highly developed written and oral skills in Te Reo underpinned by an innate knowledge of Tikanga M ori A comprehensive understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its place in tertiary education in Aotearoa New Zealand is also essential The appointee will be expected to contribute to the ongoing efforts of the Office of M ori Development to embed the goals of the M ori Strategic Framework especially within the Universitys senior academic management networks He she will also be required to act in an advisory role to support the Director of the Office of M ori Development with strategy and planning Further Details This is a permanent part time 0 5 FTE position There is scope for a further 0 5 FTE for an established senior academic to undertake work in their discipline and be aligned with a relevant academic department Some work after hours is required including attending special events eg graduation M ori pregraduation and scholarship events iwi ceremonies powhiri and other community events Application Applications quoting reference number 2000116 will close on Monday 30 March 2020
