Assistant Director - Head of Engineering and Maintenance University of Canterbury Christchurch Central, Canterbury Full-time 37.5 hours per week Generous annual leave provisions and professional development opportunities Te Ratonga Whakahaere Paenga | Facilities Management (FM) provides support to the University of Canterbury's (UC) teaching, research and support functions in four key areas: Security Services delivery, Capital works planning, programming and delivery, Operations and Maintenance planning and delivery and Support Services delivery. UC is made up of approximately 150 buildings across 87 hectares, covering a gross floor area of 223,000m2. In essence, FM is responsible for keeping UC operating safely at a quality standard for our community, which is very much like keeping a small, but very complex, town running. Au Mahi | What You Will Do As Assistant Director FM - Head of Engineering and Maintenance, and part of the FM Senior Leadership team, you will focus on enhancing performance and standards across the engineering and maintenance function. You will lead a range of highly specialised and business critical activities crucial to the success of the University and will need to provide key stakeholders across UC with the assurance and confidence required for these high risk, high impact activities. Some of the key tasks and responsibilities: Manage and lead the Engineering and Maintenance Team Deliver high quality planned preventative and reactive maintenance services whilst regularly reviewing and formally appraise the University of its statutory compliance in key risk areas Provide institutional expertise for compliance relating to the management of; electricity at work; pressure vessel systems; gas safety; lifting operations and lifting equipment compliance; the maintenance and assurance of approved codes of practice; working at height; and confined spaces Contract management of a variety of specialist contractors and consultants whilst delivering a balanced budget for Engineering and Maintenance on an annual basis Work with the FM Capital Development team to ensure that pre-enabling and infrastructure works are in place to enable the commissioning and practical completion of new buildings and building refurbishments within the Campus. You will have a significant experience (15 years+) in senior managerial, operational, or strategic development roles within a Facilities Management function. You will also have the following experience and skills: Proven expertise in the building technology relevant to construction and maintenance, including specialist knowledge of HV, water management, high pressure hot water, heating and steam systems, fire alarms, access control and CCTV Previous experience of commissioning the design of electrical and/or mechanical engineering systems Knowledge of energy conservation systems such as combined heat and power, thermal storage and heat recovery Proven expertise in managing health and safety and risk within an FM environment Demonstrable experience managing large maintenance budgets effectively and benchmarking costs Ability to manage multiple work strands and projects, demonstrating strong skills for planning, organisation and prioritisation Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present high quality written reports The ability to present complex information to non-specialist audiences within the University and to external stakeholders Commitment to equality and diversity and an active commitment to upholding the values, tikanga (protocols and processes), kawa (rules) of cultural practice and traditions as guided by mana whenua, Ngai Tuahuriri, and valuing te reo Maori. The salary range for this role is $138,252- $158,990 p.a., with appointment with the range based on skills and experience.
